Born in 1930, Toshio Odate was apprenticed in his adolescence as a tategu-shi or maker of sliding doors. He later studied art and design and went on to teach at universities in the USA, as well as authoring books on Japanese woodworking and hand tools. Odate introduces the tradition of shoji making and the attitudes and exacting methods that go into crafting these subtle rice paper covered panels and the frames they are seated into. The book is punctuated with stories of Odate’s life as an apprentice that give a unique insight into the cultural context of this craft.
