Description: Since Richard Raffan started writing his series of books in the early 80s, the field has been flooded with publications on turning. So is there room for yet another? In the case of Raffan, I'd say yes. He remains the most readable writer of such books and never descends into the over-technical rambles of some of his competitors.

This new book is his best designed and most comprehensive to date. With over 850 photographs and drawings, the layout is a delight. The book is divided into sections according to related processes, with a simple How to Use This Book section to start you out. So, for example, if you want to learn spindle turning, you are guided to p.96 where you are led through the basic techniques. After 11 pages of clear instruction and photographs, you continue to Spindle Projects, starting with a simple tool handle. You then progress through table legs, cabriole legs, split turning and long thin spindles. All the other areas of turning are similarly dealt with, and if you follow Raffan's down to earth instructions you will save yourself a lot of grief.

We have come to expect thoroughness from Raffan and there are techniques which I have not seen in his books before, such as the use of boring bars and thread chasing. He has also acknowledged that 'In the 21st century, lathe-based art isworking its way into art museums'. While this statement is about 20 years behind the times, it is good to see that a traditional turner such as Raffan accepts a development of turning that he has often derided in the past. I'd put this book at the top of my list for the library of both beginners and experienced turners.
