The whys and wherefores of converting logs, branches (and reclaimed timber) into usable boards and blanks of timber are comprehensively treated in UK author Alan Holtham’s book. Five chapters discuss the nature of wood, species classification, conversion, grain, figure and colour. The second two-thirds of the book look at moisture content and how it affects the way wood moves. Storing wood for air-drying is described and then kiln drying (including building your own kiln). Timber and timber drying defects are discussed, with avoidance in mind. If you like to collect your own wood for furniture making, turning or carving you will not fail to learn from this book even though it does not discuss Australian timber species.
