Not a new topic, but Schleining promises a 21st century look in-depth look at what you can hope for from this workshop focal point. From a general discussion of needs-based choice the book moves to constructional considerations of tops and bases. Vices, hold-downs, hooks, jacks and dogs are described. And then it’s on to plans for workbenches ‘profiled’ in the style of five famous woodworkers: Sam Maloof, Niall Barrett, Mike Dunbar, Tage Frid and the author’s own ‘new classic’ model. The book doesn’t stop there though, there is also discussion of benches you can buy and other variants and styles you can make. A chapter on special benches covers assembly and portable tables, carvers’ supports and shave horses.
