This is a very well-priced full colour update of the author’s Making Woodbenches (1995). Allen’s treatment is thorough and practical, ranging from workbench types, tops, bases and materials through to usage. There are detailed plans and cutting lists for building a joiners bench, a cabinetmakers bench and a bench with storage. A chapter on accessories is comprehensive. Customising benches for carving, furniture and instrument making takes up another chapter. The final two chapters provide a good introduction to the basic tools and supplies used and housed on a workbench.
