| Description: |
I found this book extremely interesting
as it addresses techniques and tools that will suit the intermediate
or advanced woodworker. Taken from Furniture and Cabinetmaking
Magazine, there are twenty-one separate stories and a
couple of two-part stories. Topics cover workbench construction,
using and preparing making knives and Japanese chisels, handplane
tuning, secrets of sharpening, dovetail masterclass, a simple
cabinet project and making wooden spokeshaves. The text is
both from Charlesworth's heart and mind and is really pitched
at how you can get the most from your work. Whilst the book
doesn't necessarily tell you what to make, it certainly tells
you how to go about working from the viewpoint of a skilled
craftsman. For example, the two-part story on making a wooden
spokeshave would not appeal to everyone, but for the purist
it will be highly useful. Similarly, the small Krenovian-style
cabinet, is really a woodworker's own cabinet project. Excellent
drawings and high quality photography enhance a well-printed
and stylish book which, although not a reference manual, is
certainly something you would resort to for inspiration and
help with difficult techniques.
