When Richard Raffan wrote Turned Bowl
Design in 1985 it found a ready audience and the book is now
rated a classic. With Turning Bowls, Raffan has concentrated
on 'the how of making bowls'. This is done with his now familiar
attention to detail-it's a thorough treatment of the subject
written in the most readable way. The subject matter is treated
progressively, each chapter dealing with every aspect of the
process before going on to the next. The layout of the book
is attractive and the accompanying photos are sharp and descriptive.
An overview is followed up by chapters on tools; selecting
and preparing blanks; rough-turning; rough hollowing; completing
the profile, the inside, the base and then the surface. It's
a book you'll not only learn from, you will thoroughly enjoy
reading it.
