| Description: |
Subtitled 'the Classical Tradition',
this book is for purists, or those who want a reference of
period-style architectural carvings, be they in natural, painted
or gilded forms. A brief historical introduction precedes
information on classical design and proportioning starting
back with Greek architectural precepts. The author doesn't
shirk from explaining all the jargon and consequently, if
you have the patience to read the all the text before the
book gets to its practical meat, you'll become a font of knowledge
on all things doric and ionic. The greater part of the book
contains multitudes of good colour photos (its greatest strength)
of various architectural mouldings, architraves, ovolos, friezes,
pediments, rosettes, volutes, capitals and so on. Many of
the examples are extraordinarily fine carvings and if you
already have some skills in this department you should find
the book a great reference work not to mention a source of
inspiration.
